Manufacturing costs here are MUCH MUCH higher than in China (typically 5-10x higher). In addition, he had to amortize the costs for him to R&D the molds (make mold, produce a sample part, flow test it, modify and repeat many times). Knowing what I know about manufacturing and R&D costs, $1100 was a very fair for a pair of manifolds. Also on his first few runs, Mike Smith had to port/clean up the manifolds by hand himself, which was labor intensive for him.
